Birth, Death, & Marriage Records
MUSKEGON COUNTY OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED THROUGH MONDAY, APRIL 13, 2020 IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE GOVERNOR’S EXECUTIVE ORDER AND IN AN EFFORT TO PROTECT OUR CITIZENS AND EMPLOYEES FROM THE SPREAD OF COVID-19
Births, deaths or marriages which took place in Muskegon County are recorded and filed with the Muskegon County Clerk. Search the Muskegon County Clerk’s Death, Marriage and Business Registration Index. You may also search our Online Genealogical Death Indexing System to find out if we have a copy of a death certificate for records between the years 1865 and 1965. Births, deaths or marriages that took place in another county are on file in that county.
To obtain a copy of a record, please come to the County Clerk’s office, on the first floor of the Michael E Kobza Hall of Justice.

To save you time, you may request for certified copy fillable form (PDF). Just fill out online, print, sign and mail to the County Clerk’s office, along with a photo copy of your ID and money order.
Written request must include the following information:
- Type of record requested
- Number of copies desired
- Full name as it should appear on the record
- Date of the birth, death or marriage
- For all birth records, include the father’s full name and the mother’s full maiden name
- For marriage records, include the name of the spouse.
- Effective January 1, 2017, fees will be $20 for the first certified copy, $10 for each additional copy of the same record purchased at the same time
- Include your return address and your phone number
When requesting documents via mail please enclose a self addressed stamped envelope.
Birth records are available only to the subject of the record, their heir, their legal guardian or a parent named on the record. Photo Identification is required for all birth requests. Please enclose a photo copy of your driver’s license or State ID when making a request by mail.
State-only birth records for applicants born in Muskegon County before October 2, 1978 to unwed parents or who were adopted before October 2, 1978, are now available from Muskegon County Clerk’s office. You may obtain your birth certificate the same day without having to make the trip to Lansing or waiting 5 weeks for a mail request. The fee for State Only Birth Records is $55 for one copy of $71 for two copies of the same record purchased at the same time. You may also purchase your birth certificate through Lansing’s Vital Records office.
Do not send cash through the mail. The County Clerk’s office will accept payments in the form of cash, money order or credit or debit card. Please note an additional service charge is applied to credit or debit card payments through the third party processor GovPayNet.
