Adoptions are handled in the Family Division of Circuit Court.
Michigan law allows for several types of adoptions. The most common are step-parent, relative, adult and state and court ward adoptions. In the case of a step-parent adoption when all parties agree, the adopting parents may represent themselves. However, each case is unique; therefore it is strongly recommended that you seek legal counsel to aid you in this process.
Adoption packets are available here or at the third floor receptionist’s desk.
For questions regarding adoptions, you can contact the adoption coordinator, Brenda, at (231) 724-6408 or by email.
