Paint Disposal

Paint BucketThe best way to dispose of paint is to use it up!  If you are purchasing paint for a project, consider the area you have to cover, use a paint calculator to ensure you’re not buying too much.  You may also want to consider low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint for your project due to health, air quality and environmental concerns.

If you find you have leftover latex paint that you do not want, contact Habitat for Humanity (231-727-6020) or the Muskegon Civic Theater (231-722-3852) to find a use for your leftover latex paint!  In addition, RepcoLite manufactures a recycled paint product from reclaimed latex paint called “re-coat.”  Visit their website, www.repcolite.com, for details and locations

And finally, as a last resort, since paint (latex as well as oil-based) is not considered a hazardous waste, it may be disposed of with your household trash as long as it is dried or solidified by adding kitty litter, (or other drying media) and leaving it open to dry in a well-ventilated area, away from children and animals.
